ENG 209 - World Literature I ▲ = Fulfills a General Education Requirement This course includes a comparative study of the foundational texts of world literature from antiquity to 1650. Representative works from Europe, East and South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America will be read. Examples of readings include selections from the Bible, Homer’s Odyssey, the Ramayana, the Qur’an, and Sundiata. Through such texts, this course will expose students to a diverse range of cultures and their founding mythological and religious beliefs. Emphasis will be placed on understanding each work in its broader social and historical context and how these works, in turn, serve as common points of reference for the development of the cultures, literary traditions, and belief systems to which they give rise. Prerequisite(s): ENG 102 3 lecture hours per week 3 credit hours
