PNU 192 - Nursing Concepts/Foundations
This course introduces the practical nursing student to the profession of nursing. Using the National League for Nursing (NLN) Competencies and Integrating Concepts, students are introduced to practical nursing practice and the roles and responsibilities of the Licensed Practical Nurse. Fundamental nursing concepts and practices including health promotion, communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, patient teaching, assessment, nutritional support, and pharmacological and safety principles are presented. Mental health is discussed with a focus on patient psychosocial needs while fostering open communication, mutual respect and shared decision-making. Trends in nursing practice, cultural implications of practice and the health care delivery system are also discussed. to achieve quality patient care. Content that is presented in the classroom will be reinforced with skills practice in the college laboratory and clinical experiences in patient care settings where students will apply basic nursing principles and techniques. Students will demonstrate beginning proficiency in selected skills and patient care based on the NLN Competencies and Integrating Concepts. Supporting the NLN Competencies and Integrating Concepts, the QSEN competencies and National Patient Safety Goals are discussed. Prerequisite(s): BIO 105 , all developmental course work, and GPA 2.5 Co-requisite(s): BIO 106 , ENG 101 , and PSY 101 or PSY 102 60 lecture hours, 45 clinical hours, and 45 skills lab hours per semester 6 credit hours
